Scouts of the World Award

The Scouts of the World Award (SOWA) is the only pure Network award in the UK with the aim of encouraging members to develop and support society, locally or globally. It enables members to develop a range of skills from project management to planning an international trip and many of these skills can benefit them both inside and out of Scouting. The experience will show Network members that they can implement change and work to improve the lives or environment of other people.

To gain this award members must first attend a SOWA Discovery course followed by 80 hours of SOWA voluntary service, either in the UK or abroad, based on one of more of the three themes: Development, Environment and Peace. Members will be supported throughout their voluntary service by a mentor.

The next Discovery course to be run by Staffordshire will be on Saturday 13th May and Saturday 3rd June 2017, 9.30am – 5.00pm at Alsager Scout HQ, ST7 2PQ. Attendance is required at both days to complete the Discovery course. The course costs £25 and this will include all training and resources, and a buffet lunch and refreshments on both days.

You will need to complete the application form here – and send it with the £25 to the County Office.  Application forms can be sent by email in advance of payment. Cheques are preferred but for other payment options please ask. Closing date for applications is 8th May (or earlier if all places are allocated). Any queries should be sent to the Course Director, Bruce Field – bruce.field@staffordshirescouts.org.uk

If you haven’t already done so and if you have access to it, please also join the event on the UK Scout Network website.

Further information about the award can be found on the Scouts website.
